Dollar Thrifty shares plummet

Shares of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. plunged 37 percent Monday following news late Friday that the company expects its 2007 profit to be lower than forecast.

The Tulsa-based rental car company saw its share price drop $9.62 to close at $16.40 on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 3.4 million shares were traded.

It was the biggest drop since Dollar Thrifty's initial public stock offering in December 1997, according to Bloomberg data.

The 52-week high coincided with rumors that Dollar Thrifty and Tulsa-based Vanguard Car Rental USA Inc. were in merger talks. Such a deal never materialized.

Politicians bring style to corridors of power

Herbert is the liveliest dresser in civic politics these days, and he says he draws inspiration from colourful politicians of the past, such as prime ministers Pierre Trudeau and John A. Macdonald. Trudeau once wore a cape to a Grey Cup game. "They had some pizzazz," Herbert said.

He noted that the public often sees politicians as authority figures in their suits and ties, and he thinks some sartorial splendour sets him apart from the crowd. "A bit of brightness or a funny pattern can certainly brighten the mood," he said. "It can help people deal with you."

Herbert isn't the only politician who has injected a sense of style into the local political scene. Vancouver Centre MP Hedy Fry and Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt look like they spend a fair amount of time thinking about what they wear.

Relax, Leafs fans. There will be playoff hockey at the Air Canada Centre next spring.

That's the prediction from EA Sports, anyway, after playing the entire upcoming season with the company's NHL '08 video game. The results:

The Leafs will finish seventh in the Eastern Conference, win a seven-game first-round series with Ottawa but fall at the next hurdle to the Rangers in six.

The worst team in the league will be the Washington Capitals, last in the East with 67 points.

Martin St. Louis of Tampa Bay will win the scoring title, and Sidney Crosby will repeat as Hart Trophy winner for the league MVP.

The New York Rangers and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks will win their respective conferences, then run aground in the playoffs, the Rangers ousted by Pittsburgh in the East final and the Ducks bounced by Edmonton in the West semifinal.

Homelessness in Borderland, By LAUREL BEAGER, Editor

The answers from third and fourth graders at Falls Elementary School Tuesday were revealing.

“No food," said one student. “No baths," said another, while other students added their ideas to the conversation led by Lesley Kruse, Kootasca Community Action coordinating of housing, and LeeAnn Meer, Kootasca director of community action.

The students put their words into action by creating posters about the homelessness. Using colorful pencils, markers and crayons, some of the posters listed their perceptions of the difficulties of being homeless, while other students described items that they would go without if homeless.

One boy suggested that a friend's poster would be more effective if the tail on a dog depicted in orange crayon walking away from the stick-house “was between it's legs to show he's nervous" about being homeless.

FIFTH ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, Christchurch:

The rain has lessened but not ceased completely, and the umpires are having a chat with the ground staff.

"Wouldn't it be ironic if the England bowling, which has been the weak part of this whole series, turned out to be the winning factor in this match? Not that I want to become too optimistic at this stage... but 'hope springs eternal'..."Paul, another expatriate Brit in Canada (Vancouver area), in the TMS inbox

"Oh dear are England doing it again, making us all think it's a lost cause and then coming back giving us hope, only to disappoint? Hope not"Andy, Alberta, in the TMS inbox

"We all wake up to doom and gloom, and then suddenly three wickets down. Who says the power of prayer/positive thought doesn't work!"Carol, reading online in Portugal [Someone may have done a rain dance since you sent that e-mail - MM]

All-round safety in car

The impulse from the central computer releases a surge of electricity that heats a wire made of a shape memory alloy. This wire is the actual trigger.

We opted for this solution because it is faster than any conventional solenoid switch, says Seipel. The heat bends the wire, which then releases a spring. The spring slackens and pushes a steel bolt, which is integrated in the seat, towards the door. At the same time a stable metal body in the door is brought into position to support the steel bolt.

The system of the bolt and the metal box stabilizes the car door and absorbs energy on collision, explains Seipel. To prove that the new side-impact protection system actually works in a real crash situation, he will carry out a crash test in Spain on March 7. The passenger cell will be on display at the Hannover trade fair on April 21 through 25.

A secret Oregon for any season

It was there, on a deck looking out at the windsurfers and Neahkahnie Mountain, that on my first day I embarked on my first strenuous vacation activity: studying the house owner's foot-high pile of activity brochures.

Without driving more than 10 minutes, I could go boogie-boarding. Crabbing. Golfing. Horseback riding on the beach. Bicycling in the bike lanes along U.S. 101. Kayaking on the Nehalem River. Shopping for antiques in Wheeler.

Or I could just sit back and watch, in the words of one brochure, the "world class" rainbows.

Estes posts solid win over Stafford

The local things are meeting transportation needs and the illegal immigration problem."

Estes noted concerns with legislative funding and snafus at the Texas Department of Transportation, along with concerns about the Trans-Texas corridor.

On immigration, Estes said he heard universal agreement that the borders must be made secure, but feels the federal government must step up and help pay to do it. “It's an international border," he said. “Texas can't do it all."

That border may seem a long way away to folks in Wichita Falls, he said, “but it affects every Texan."

Estes said he would continue legislation that would attack methamphetamine use, something he said would probably be a “never-ending fight."

Estes said he'd felt an outpouring of support throughout the campaign, “voting support and financial support.
